RSOE EDIS - Emergency and Disaster Information Service

The Hungarian National Association of Radio Distress-Signalling and Infocommunications (RSOE) operates Emergency and Disaster Information Service (EDIS) within the frame of its own website which has the objective to monitor and document all the events on the Earth which may cause disaster or emergency. Our service is using the speed and the data spectrum of the internet to gather information. We are monitoring and processing several foreign organisation's data to get quick and certified information. The EDIS website operated together by the General-Directorate of National Disaster Management (OKF) and RSOE, in co-operation with the Crisis Management Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provides useful information regarding emergency situations and their prevention.

Guinea Ebola Outbreak. Over 50 Dead.

Ebola Virus Pandemic Kills Millions
Ebola Has A Death Rate Of 90%
There have been 29 confirmed deaths from hemorrhagic fever among 59 people killed by a mysterious illness in southeastern Guinea since early February. At least five of the dead in Guinea have been medical officials.

Health officials are trying to fight the outbreak of Ebola in Guinea and have dispatched specialized medical equipment, imposed restrictions on funerals and are seeking to contain the panic in order to prevent the fever from spreading.

Ebola has a fatality rate of 90% and U.N. health officials have expressed great concern that the disease may spread to Sierra Leone after cases showing similar symptoms, including diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding, were reported there.

Fortunately Ebola in its present form spreads only from direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual. However some experts fear the virus could mutate and become airborne. This would represent a hazard on a global scale.

NASA Predicts The Beginning Of The End

Disaster Planning
Time To Start Prepping
A study funded by NASA has attempted to understand why past societies have fallen apart has given us a bleak picture of the not so distant future. The study uses a mathematical model that incorporates both environmental pressures, social and political dynamics to explore how societies such as ours may be disrupted in the future.

In simple terms the study found that things fall apart when we use up our resources faster than we can replace them and when a small number of well off people control too much of the wealth and power. In other words if the rich eat all the food the poor will starve and the rich cant survive without the poor. Now this is not new information. Many of us have known this for years. But with NASA in the title it gets more attention in the press.

Will this happen? Who knows. What the study cant predict is what effect technology will have on the future of our civilization. All the past civilizations that were used in the study were primitive by our standards. The folks who did this study could not look at an advanced civilization like ours that collapsed as this is the first one that has ever existed. We are in uncharted waters here. We are in a race with ourselves. Can our brains and incredible ingenuity save us from our own stupidity?

Right now a lot of really smart people are working on new energy sources. Things like fusion power and advanced solar power. Other people are learning how to grow more food with less resources. And of course we have the power to regulate our population already we just don't have the will to do it yet.

Will civilization survive? Who knows. I however will keep prepping for the worst. But I hope for the best. It would be a shame if we let it all fall apart.

The federal debt ceiling and the end of the world

End Of The World
Flirting With Disaster
Again we are watching the Politicians in Washington take us all to the brink of a possible disaster. The United States government will soon be unable to pay all its bills -- causing what the Obama administration says will be a historic default on the federal debt. Without some action by Congress to raise the debt ceiling, the Treasury Department says default could happen any day after Oct. 17. Now I am 99% sure they will once again pull a rabbit out of the hat at the last second but you should ask yourself what if they don't?

The fact is no one can tell what the consequences would be if the United States was to default on its debt. Many so called experts have given us a variety of opinions ranging from it would not be that bad to its the end of the World.

I myself really cant say. However I don't think it would be good for most of us. So my advice is to stock up on supplies. Have some cash on hand. However cash is of little use if inflation renders it worthless. Gold would be better than cash but most of us cant afford to stockpile gold.

Think of things people would want and that could become scarce if the economy was to crash. Gasoline. Ammunition. Foods of all kinds.

BE PREPARED.

Keep An Eye Out For Food On Sale

I was at the store the other day and I found a great deal on crackers. Things like crackers will last for decades if you keep them cool and dry. They may go a tad stale but you can still eat them. So if the price is right I say grab them. You may be glad you did.
Emergency Food.
When you see stuff on sale. Its a great idea to stock up.

11 Uses for a Smart Phone in an Emergency Situation!

11 Uses for a Smart Phone in Emergency Situations!
Use your cellphone camera to look around
objects without exposing yourself.
I was sitting looking at my smart phone and thinking about what good will it be when the world falls apart. I came up with a few ideas. I am sure there are more.

Flashlight. Makes a good flash light. Some even have a flash light App.

Memorization Tool. Camera still works and that could be handy for taking photos of things you need to remember. Like landmarks for navigating or things you are taking apart that you need to put back together.

Periscope. Camera makes a good periscope. You can use it for looking around corners with out sticking your head out.

Morale Booster. If it has music or games on it that could be a fantastic morale booster.

Compass. The compass on mine appears to work with out the Internet.

Fire starter. You can short out the battery to start a fire.

Stop Watch. Not sure what you would use this for but something may come up.

GPS Locators. The satellites that send out the GPS signals may still be working. So with a GPS App you can get your location.

Phone Calls. It may still work for a short time after the land lines go down. May not but you may need to contact family members or friends

Calculator. The calculator still works without the Internet and may be handy for the math impaired among us. Math is far more important than you may think for navigating, food rationing etc.

Secret Communications. You can password protect your phone and leave it for another person who knows your password to pick up. Then they can read or listen to your message. Could be handy.

If you are wondering how to keep your phone charged after the end of the world it may not be too hard. You can get a solar charger or charge it from a car battery. A car battery will charge it quite a few times before the car battery will need charging.

The Importance Of Trade Items

Trade items, End Of The World,
Ammunition, Matches, Alcohol, Just a few things that you can have on hand to trade with.
You can't do it by yourself. No matter how well prepared you are the fact is you will find others have things you need.  Money will be no good. Gold may be no good. You will have to steal it or trade for it and trading is much safer. So what can you get now that you can trade later.

I have started a list of things that I think would be good to have on hand with the idea of trading. You can add your own ideas.

Gasoline and other fuels. If the S##T hits the fan gas will be worth more than gold.

Ammunition. Ammunition is hard to make from scratch so supplies may run short. People will be scared and desperate for ammo.

Alcohol and cigarettes. People have vices. They will trade valuable stuff for a shot of whisky or a few smokes.

Medical Supplies. Any kind of med supplies are valuable. Not just fancy stuff like antibiotics but things like peroxide and rubbing alcohol will be in short supply.

Food. It goes with out saying that food will be a great trade item. Starving people will give anything for a can of beans. I know that sounds harsh and uncaring but it may come to that if you want your family to live.

Matches. Most people don't have a clue how to start a fire. They will figure it out eventually but at first they will be desperate for matches.

Candles. People hate the dark. They get scared and put a greater importance on candles than they may really have.

Books. I know this sounds a bit strange but more and more we rely on the Internet for looking things up. People will want books on things like edible wild plants,  medical books, survival skills. That sort of things.

So if you get the chance to pick up some extra stuff for trade I would recommend it. It may just save your life.

Bond Arms Snake Slayer or Perhaps Zombie Slayer

Zombie Apocalypse Survivor: Bond Ams Snake Slayer Gun
I just picked up my new Bond Arms Snake Slayer (Well ok its my Wife's) I wont go into too much detail as you can find plenty of info and reviews on line and I see no point in repeating all that. So I will just concentrate on the anti Zombie potential of Snake Slayer.

In brief the Snake Slayer is a cool little .410 shotshell/.45Colt pistol. It looks like an old fashioned Derringer but its made to modern standards and is bigger than the original Derringers.  I should also say that you can get it in many other calibers just by swapping out the barrels but its the .410 shotshell/.45Colt that we are talking about as that's what I have.

As an anti Zombie weapon the Snake slayer has a few problems. I will get them out of the way first so we can talk about all the good features of this gun.

CONS AS A ZOMBIE KILLER GUN

1) Limited to 2 shots. Because its in the style of a Derringer it only holds 2 rounds and reloading is quite slow. The best reload time I can get is about 10 seconds. Someone younger and faster could probably do a little better but its still slow. When surrounded by hoards of the undead 10 seconds is an eternity.

2) Single action. As the Snake Slayer is single action you need to manually cook the hammer for each shot and that will also slow your rate of fire down a tad.

3) Bad sights. The sights on this little gun are just not that great. The rear sight is small and as the gun is all one colour (stainless steel) I find it quite hard to get a quick sight picture. However to be fair the gun is intended to be used at extremely close range so the sights are just a guide.

PROS AS A ZOMBIE KILLER GUN

Now for the good stuff.

1) Quality. The Snake Slayer is well made. It's a solid hunk of stainless steel that just looks really good. It feels like with a little care it would last a lifetime.

2) Reliability. I have found it quite reliable. I have had no issues with any brand of ammo that I have used. In fact I have had no misfires or any failures at all. I should say however that the gun has only had 250 rounds through it so something may crop up yet.

3) Its versatile. This gun is really a little tiny shot gun and as such its very versatile. With a simple change of shells you can go from shooting small animals like snakes or small birds to defending yourself from larger attackers like dogs or Zombies. A blast of .410 buckshot is devastating at close range. And with slugs or .45 Colt you can extend your range out to a considerable distance. I found it easy to ring a 12 inch steel gong at 60 yards from a seated position. I was able to hit it a few times from a standing position as well but I found it difficult. I should also mention that after about 5 shots it started to get a little hard on the hand. The recoil with slugs is managable but some may find it a bit much.

4) Easy to use. Its a really simple gun to use. Push the safety. Cock the hammer. Pull the trigger.

5) Safe. Because its so simple to use I believe it would be a gun that lends itself to safe use. The safety is large and simple and easy to use. Its a single action so one must cock the hammer before you can shoot it. It also has a rather stiff trigger pull that makes it hard for someone who is in a stressful situation to have an accidental discharge. You have to pull the trigger hard to make this gun go bang.

6) Easy to carry. At about 22 oz it's a nice easy gun to carry around. Yes you can find lighter guns but when you combine the light weight with the firepower of .410 buckshot its a nice carry gun.

So to sum it all up the Snake Slayer may not be the best Zombie gun but in my opinion its a handy little gun that would make a great back up gun or a good carry gun for most self defence situations. Just not hordes of the UnDead.

Preparing for Emergencies and Disasters

Do you have a plan in place for your family in case of emergency or disaster? We decided long ago that we should always have a 3 month supply of food and water on hand.

Like many other families we began with saving  a 2-week food supply. Eventually that became one month of food, and now we are prepared for 3 months.  One month of food for your family is a realistic goal and I'm going to help you figure out what you need and where and how to store it.

We're not alarmists. We don't think the world is ending in December 2012  But natural disasters happen - floods, tornadoes, super volcanoes, pandemics, hurricanes, forest fires, earthquakes to name a few.

Ice storms also occur where we live and power can be knocked out for weeks. If it's winter and you have no power, can you survive? Do you have a plan for staying warm? What about cooking your food IF you have food stored - how will you accomplish this?

Disasters come in all shapes and sizes. Some are short-lived - perhaps a few days or a week or two of power outages and inconvenience. Some could be longer - even up to a few months. Do you have enough stored food on hand for your family for that long?

In a series of blog posts I'm going to share with you the plans that hubs and I have in effect. I'll show you what foods we have stored and tell you our reasons (mainly shelf life and ability to extend to feed many people)

There's so much to research and learn before you start buying and storing food. Hubs and I started as most families do - we bought in bulk whenever something went on sale. So we ended up with many cans of pork 'n beans and soup. But guess what - canned goods have a short shelf life (less than 3 years) so unless you're prepared to eat a lot of beans and soup when that 3 years is up, it's not the best emergency supply food.

So stay tuned, check back frequently, and follow the topic in the right hand menu bar "SURVIVAL FOOD STORAGE" or "DISASTER PLANNING" to read all the great tips I'm going to be sharing with you.

Zombie Ant-pocalypse

This news story about Zombie Ants and Zombie Fungus has been making the rounds and while I am pretty sure its nothing to worry about. It shows that there are lots of strange things in this world. SO BE PREPARED.

These particular fungus species take over ant brains with mind-altering chemicals, control them like voodoo dolls and then kill them once they have done the fungus’ bidding.
